I have many non-math hobbies. I enjoy cooking, writing, photography, building useless websites, traveling, getting haircuts, speaking German with Austrian influences, and exploring cities. I spent five years exploring Austria, and now I have a whole new island to explore.

• Mundart: If you want to learn Standard German, there are many resources. For the Austrian dialects (Mundart) it’s a bit more difficult. One can buy a German-Austrian dictionary, and there are plenty of user maintained regional Mundart websites. Other than SMSing with friends, what I found helpful to learn from is the Austro-Bavarian Wikipedia site.
• Woodworking: Before I moved, I spent some time in Philadelphia learning to build things out of wood. A good starting point for learning to build simple furniture is Ana White’s website and blog. I built a night stand and a large book shelf.
• Digital Photography: There are plenty of books/websites/youtube channels for photography. To get started learning about postproduction of digital photographs, I watched videos from the PHLEARN website and associated Youtube channel. If you can get past the host’s sometimes annoying enthusiasm, it offers great tutorials for the basics in digital negative development and editing.
• Cooking: More than just cooking, I enjoy food science. What got me started was the Food Network Series Good Eats hosted by Alton Brown. There are also some great sites (like Serious Eats, Chef Steps-again with an annoyingly enthusiastic host, and many others) which use varying degrees of scientific rigor to understand how cooking processes work and how to get the best outcomes in your kitchen.
